Why Not Make a Garden Log Cabin?

AUTHOR: dennis

We all dream from time to time about having a log cabin in our backyard, but is it difficult to turn that dream into a reality?  Quite a few kits for garden log cabins are on the market, but the cheapest and most satisfying way is to build it yourself. This is the way to do it.

Although easy to build, your log cabin design must be thorough from the start and you should get professional plans and expert advice to help you do this.  Consider getting the vital materials list prepared for you – it will save you much time and money.  Good quality plans are a vital investment, and will include all the necessary design calculations.

Usually garden log cabins have only four sides.  Any other shape will lead to extra corners and therefore more complication and cost. A good size for a log cabin home would be about 20 ft by 30 ft.  Look for a raised site to avoid damp and prepare a reasonably level area to accommodate the structure.

Floors of garden log cabins are often the earth itself or, more likely, wooden planks.  The latter would be preferable and easier to keep clean.

We are all looking for ways to save money and stay green but often there has to be a compromise between comfort, cost and the environment.  Many devices such as solar panels or wind turbines may produce power but for some people the cost can out-weigh the benefits.

But there are plenty of ways to save money; stay green and heat your home and often these ways come from unexpected quarters. Open-fires for instance are often considered not to be very environmentally friendly; after-all they do produce smoke that pumps carbon dioxide into our environment. But then again, so do we!

When you start burning waste material, stuff like used teabags, old newspapers, junk mail, toilet rolls etc, much of which is difficult to recycle then the benefits to the environment out-weigh the negative effects that burning this material causes, particularly if the material burns slowly, produces lots of heat with little smoke.

There are ways to increase efficiency in burning recycled waste. The best method is to pack the material as tightly as possible as this helps it burn more slowly. There are devices like log-makers that can scrunch up waste material so tight they can burn almost as well as natural logs.

Log Cabins are generally made from sustainable timber and other materials and come from the coldest parts of the world. Wood in cold countries grows more slowly and is therefore ticker and more robust. This makes the timber less prone to warping, splitting and cracking. The wood can be kiln dried to ensure that no moisture exists during the building of the log cabin.

If your idea of log cabins is weekend getaways in some hilltop or forest areas, then you are strongly mistaken. Today more than 80% of homeowners in and around metropolitan regions have modular log homes. These prefab homes are made of packaged, smooth and uniform milled logs. As the milled logs have been smoothened by processing at the saw mills, they are a good choice for easy-to-assemble log cabins. These modular cabin homes have the charming look and feel of rustic log cabin without the traditional annoying factors of main trance and log cabins. After all, not many of us like the idea of traditional log cabins with chinks in the dried mud between the logs to let the cold air.

Modular log homes are made of processed woods. Mainly woods of pine, fir, cedar, and spruce are used for building these types of homes. White pine or western red cedar is considered as some of the premier wood species to build log cabins. Woods are one of most natural and environment friendly resources to build homes. Harvesting these woods would cause less damage to the environment. Moreover, it’s easy to work with woods than with brick, stone or concrete.

There are many choices to be made for the overall look and feel of your log home between log styles, log shapes, corner styles and whether or not to use milled logs.

You first decision will be milled logs vs. handcrafted logs. Here’s the breakdown:

Handcrafted Log Styles

Hand Cut and Fitted

Each log used in your log cabin is carefully selected and cut by hand. The log is scribed and fitted into position, then numbered or lettered according to a master plan. Once the cabin is built in the log home company’s yard, it is disassembled and shipped to your site where it is re-assembled.

Irregular Shape and Size

Because the logs are not milled but taken directly from the wild they are not a uniform size and shape. There will be some variation in log diameter and length as well as the overall taper of the log. Logs used in a handcrafted log home are typically longer than milled logs and this will reduce the number of butt joints in the wall assembly.

With so many choices for home buyers today, sellers must make their home seem extra special. A scrapbook or album makes any everyday event seem special, so why not use this tool to sell your home? Create a home journal or scrapbook to show your buyer the special features of your home and to help them decide that your home will bring them many happy memories of their own.

Create a notebook that presents itself like an attractive journal or scrapbook. You can use a simple three-ring binder or a store-bought scrapbook or photo album. Think beauty and functionality.

Take a photograph of your home’s best feature and put it on the cover. Most of the time, the photograph is a picture of the front exterior. But if your home features a dramatic fireplace or a gorgeous garden, highlight this benefit to the buyer. Give your home a special name and include this on the cover of your journal.

Inside your journal, create some pages that highlight areas of your home that will benefit your buyers. You might label pages with pictures and phrases like “relax in the garden” or “enjoy cooking in this spacious kitchen.”

Home schooling is not easy and most parents that do home schooling will admit to you that it is a lot tougher. It is for this reason that many parents who do home schooling get together with home schooling groups, which does make it easier. When home schooling groups get together they help all the parents do better with the home schooling. However, it is not easy to get together with all the parents and therefore the home schooling groups must do public relations and develop community goodwill.

If you live in an area that doesn’t have a strong home schooling presence, you may need to develop your own home schooling curriculums. Fortunately, there are a lot of books and resources on the subject. Check your local library as a starting point. You also may find general home schooling curriculums online. Once you find a home schooling curriculum to work with, you will need to figure out how much leeway you have with it. One of the advantages of home schooling is you can allow your children to gravitate toward subjects that interest them.
