The Holly – Color Contributor To Winter Scenes

Broad-leaved evergreens are choice plants for a garden, where they are valued for their permanence and particularly for their color contributions to the winter scene.

American holly is one of these. Its fine qualities are now recognized. There are American hollies in Tower Grove Park in St. Louis which are over 100 years old. Over a century they have been subjected to heat and drought, wet seasons, extreme cold, ice storms and city smoke. This is indicative of the ability of this holly to withstand the changing climatic conditions.

The native habitat of American holly (Ilex opaca) is along the eastern seaboard from Massachusetts to Florida and inland as far as Texas. It is listed as native to southeastern Missouri but is pretty much extinct there. One of the hardiest hollies, it will survive winters as far north as the Iowa-Missouri boundary, but beyond that it might be subject to winter injury in some years. Much interest in holly is centered in Maryland and New Jersey. The Holly Society of America, organized in Baltimore in 1947, is a very lively organization. Holly experts have recognized the superior qualities of certain trees in the East, have named and propagated them, and these are now available as pot plants.

In addition to the American holly, there are several other evergreen hollies that are fairly hardy: crenata or Japanese holly – a black berried kind; and cornuta with its well-known variety ‘Burfordi.’

Not so many years ago just like the sago palm plant, holly was seldom planted because it was considered difficult to transplant and grow. Hollies were raised from seeds and since the sexes are on separate plants there was an interval of many years before one could tell which trees would have berries. A red-berried holly tree is a cheerful sight in winter, so naturally when one plants a holly one hopes it will be the fruiting kind.

It is evident that to have a holly certain to be laden with berries in the winter, we must plant only those which have been propagated by cuttings from trees that are known to produce berries. Many named varieties, propagated this way, are now available from nurserymen. A few such varieties are listed at the end of this article. Furthermore, to insure a good crop of berries, one of the trees in the group must be a male tree (unless there is already one in the neighborhood). The bees are the chief transfer agents of the pollen, which they unwittingly carry from flower to flower in their search for nectar. Thus the flowers on the pistillate, or female, trees are pollinated, and the tree will set fruit.

Buying a Home Log Cabin – What you need to know

How much you pay for log cabins depends not just on the size of the building but also what types of logs have been used to build it. There are some, which have been built using handcrafted logs, which are quite expensive, and there are those that have been built from milled logs and these types of cabins are a lot less expensive.

It is important therefore before you actually decide on getting such a cabin built you know the difference between milled and handcrafted logs. Generally, those that are milled have been prepared using either a sawmill, a lathe or a planer. This then ensures that each log will be cut to a specific profile or shape. As you will soon discover milled logs have a far more uniformed shape and size to them compared to handcrafted ones.

In addition, what you will often find that milled log cabins are ones where the wood has been either air or kiln dried. This enables the right amount of moisture to be extracted from the wood before they are used to build a home with.

Because the wood will have been either planed, sawn or lathed the surface of the logs will be smooth. Plus in many cases, they will also have a tongue and groove joints so actually putting the logs together is much easier. This means that building the cabin is a lot easier and will often take a lot less time to complete. However, if you want to retain that rustic look to your cabin the outer face of the log can retain its rough bark coating.

In most cases, the trees from which the wood for these types of logs used are pines, spruces, firs as well as cedars. For a cheap but well built milled cabin, buy one made from either pine or spruce. However, if you have a little more money in your budget then consider getting one made using cedar instead.

Above we have explained something about what milled logs are, now we will provide you with some information regarding handcrafted ones. These will be prepared using either a drawknife so the wood will be hand peeled or they will be water peeled. In most cases, the wood will still be green, as the trees from the which the logs are being produced have only been cut for a few days or a week. Where as milled logs can be either air or kiln dried, with handcrafted ones the only way is to extract moisture is through air-drying. There are unfortunately not enough kilns around which are large enough to accommodate these logs.

As well as pine and spruce being favorite trees for making handcrafted log cabins from other trees that are used are the Douglas fir, Oak, Juniper, Cyprus and Alpine Fir. The last tree mentioned is also known as a True Fir.

As mentioned the cost you pay for buying and having log cabins constructed will not only depend on the way in which the logs have been prepared. You also need to take into consideration the size of the cabin you are having built. The bigger the cabin then the more labour intensive and the more logs will be needed in order to build it. If you want to save money but would like a large cabin then you are better off going for milled rather than handcrafted logs.

How To Revive A Dying Lawn

Grass is really quite a resilient plant, so with some very simple lawn care, it’s usually quite easy to keep your lawn’s “health” good. You’ll need to water it often, fertilise and use a lawnmower to hinder the growth of weeds.

If you’ve disregarded the lawn care (people have jobs, kids – it can be hard to find the time), the grass quality will no doubt suffer. When this has occurred, it’s time to start the lawn restoration.

Unless the lawn is completely ruined, with some intensive lawn care, you should be able to fix most problems. It just may take a little time.

If there’s no way to save the lawn (if the damage is too intensive), it’s usually best to start from the beginning. Start by rotating the soil by digging into the grass and turning it slightly with a shovel. Then apply new grass seeds and cover them with a layer of soil.

It goes without saying that, when you’re trying to get the grass to grow back, you need to follow an intensive lawn care routine. Use the fertiliser recommended by the garden center and keep the grass well watered.

OK, so if you’ve not reached the stage where you need to completely regrow the lawn, the most regular lawn-care complaint is that people have let the grass grow for too long. When this occurred, moss and fungus can spread quickly.

Here’s a quick warning: At this stage, if you simply grab your lawnmower and start to cut, you’ll rip up the grass and cause more damage!

So what should you do instead? The best way to handle this type of damage is to only cut a small section of the grass with a strimmer (otherwise know as a string or grass trimmer). Let the grass recover from this for just a few days and then go back to it and cut a few more inches off. Keep repeating this process until it’s short enough to use a lawnmower.

Grass needs nitrogen in the soil to survive. If you’ve neglected to fertilise the soil often, you may start to see the grass get a yellow tinge. If you see this, it’s an indicator of too little nitrogen in the soil.

You should pop down to your garden center and buy a step-system fertiliser. Not only are these really simple to use, they’re incredibly helpful for getting the grass just the right nutrients.

Weeds can spread extremely quickly, so always remember to rip them out of the ground (thus completely killing the roots) as soon as you notice them. Fail to do this, and you’ll just cause more work for yourself in trying to get rid of them later when they’ve spread all over the lawn.

Brown patches of grass are where it’s died or is nearly dead. The most simple way to recover these area’s is to dig up the soil, scatter new seed, fertilise and cover with more soil.

After you’ve done this, keep the area fertilised and watered whilst the grass seeds take root. As the growing season commences, the new seeds should fill out the area.

There’s not much else to it, and it certainly isn’t rocket science. When the lawn is back to a great condition just make sure you stick to that lawn care routine. Always use a lawnmower and strimmer regularly and keep the grass well watered.
